Security Overview for Sri Lanka
While the violent campaign by Tamil separatists raged, terrorism, civil unrest and geopolitical concerns significantly affected internal security in Sri Lanka. With the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2009, street crime is now the main threat to foreigners. Petty theft occurs in crowded tourist areas and at transport centers throughout the country. Public transportation, especially minibuses and trains, can be dangerously overcrowded, making passengers ideal targets. Women should not travel alone, especially at night. Moving in groups and restricting nighttime movements outside main cities and towns is highly advisable.
Extreme caution is necessary if operating on the Jaffna Peninsula or in areas near the Wanni region, which was until recently under the control of LTTE rebels. A strong military presence remains in the area, and a massive humanitarian effort will be required for some time to come in the wake of the civil war that raged for decades. The security situation is stable for the moment.
Demonstrations over political and economic issues occur in Sri Lanka. The largest protests typically take place in Colombo and other main cities. Ethno-religious rioting may erupt unexpectedly. In the past this was particularly true in ethnically diverse areas such as Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara districts in the eastern part of the country. It is unclear what effect the end of the Tamil separatist campaign will have on this trend. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and stay away from security personnel and military installations. Anticipate roadblocks and vehicle checks in former conflict zones.
