Security Overview for Qatar
Qatar is an extremely wealthy, Western-leaning Arab state in the midst of a modernization and liberalization drive. Although violent crime toward travelers is rare, petty crime is on the rise, especially in areas of Doha dominated by foreign workers. Follow commonsense precautions and stay away from disreputable districts; avoid dark areas at night and be alert for pickpockets.
Women traveling in Qatar, especially if traveling alone, have been subjected to verbal and physical harassment by Arab and South Asian men. Dress conservatively and avoid direct contact with men unless on a business matter. Travel in a group or with a known male companion when possible.
The risk of civil unrest is minimal. Political protests are rare even as anti-Western sentiment is high. Labor unrest is minimal and normally over in one-two hours.
The U.S. military has a substantial military presence in Qatar, including the forward headquarters for the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) at Al-Udeid Air Base.
Historically, terrorism has not been a major threat in Qatar, The unprecedented March 2005 suicide car bombing at the Doha Players Theater, which killed at least one British citizen and injured 12 people, is a reminder that attacks are possible in Qatar.
