Security Overview for Malta
Malta has a low rate of violent crime. Most visits to the island are trouble-free. Crime against travelers is rare, although robberies and pickpocketing can occur. Theft of unattended personal property, vehicle break-ins and home burglaries are common.
Violent crime is low throughout Malta; however, armed robberies of businesses and banks and drug-related crimes have increased. Incidents involving illegal narcotics commonly occur in Paceville and Sliema, the areas most widely frequented by tourists. Avoid traveling at night in Valletta and Victoria.
Malta has many dimly lit streets and remote areas with no sidewalks or streetlights. Whenever possible, avoid these areas, or walk on well-lit streets or in the middle of the sidewalk.
Demonstrations and protests are generally peaceful and do not often lead to violence. In 2006 however, illegal immigrants staged riots in Valetta, protesting living conditions and alleged delays in processing asylum applications. The issue of illegal immigrants continues to increase tensions on the island.
While the terrorist threat level in Malta is considered medium, particularly due to the country's proximity to the Middle East and Northern Africa, there is no current intelligence indicating that Malta is a target for terrorist acts.
